Transforming struggles into triumph: RCSP empowers farmers for a better future

Once upon a time, the areas of included Ruterana in Muhanga District, Kajevuba and Ruzigambogo in Gasabo District, Kanyonyomba in Gatsibo District, Rwinkwavu in Kayonza District, Bwanya in Gicumbi and Gatsibo Districts, and Gakenke in Gakenke District, located in the southern and eastern provinces respectively, faced immense challenges. Limited agricultural productivity, poverty, and hopelessness cast a shadow over the communities

In the midst of adversity, a project emerged, bringing new hope to the farmers. The Rural Community Support Project (RCSP), with the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Government of Rwanda, aimed to transform lives by increasing agricultural production, improving incomes, and fostering self-help and cooperation.

With RCSP's intervention, a wave of change swept through the villages. Smallholder farmers were provided with the necessary resources and expertise to cultivate rice, maize, beans, horticulture (fruits and vegetables among other crops. Improved farming techniques and training in improved agricultural practices were introduced ensuring sustainable cultivation

RCSP recognized the importance of land management and introduced the construction of bench terraces, irrigation infrastructure and marshland rehabilitation. This not only prevented soil erosion but also conserved water, enabling farmers to cultivate their land more efficiently. The project also fostered unity among the farmers, forming Self Help Groups and cooperatives, promoting collaboration and collective decision-making.

Farmers also received training in agronomy, composting, seed multiplication, and post-harvest handling. Armed with knowledge, farmers implemented best practices, increasing yields and improving crop quality. Trainings in cooperative management and micro-credit operation empowered the farmers to overcome financial barriers and invest in their farms.

During the project implementation, outstanding farmers received awards and prizes. The awards sought to strengthen beneficiary farmer’s ownership, contribute agricultural productivity increment and farmer’s income, enhance the cooperatives and SHGs formation and self-sustenance

The impact of RCSP was profound. Farmers' lives underwent a remarkable transformation. Increased agricultural productivity and enhanced market access led to a significant rise in incomes. The newfound economic stability allowed them to improve their living conditions, purchasing cows and goats to expand their agricultural enterprises. Decent houses were constructed, providing secure and comfortable shelter for their families.

Over the years, the project gradually phased out, but what was once a tale of struggles and hardships underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving into a story of triumph and prosperity.

RCSP was funded by KOICA and implemented under the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB)-Single Project Implementation Unit (SPIU).
